Elon Musk Accuses Indian Oligarchs of Blocking Starlink Entry
Elon Musk claims Indian oligarchs are blocking Starlink's market entry to maintain a monopoly, a charge the Indian government dismisses as baseless and misconceived.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk accused unnamed Indian oligarchs of blocking Starlink's entry into the Indian market to maintain a monopolistic chokehold on the population, calling the delay a crime against the people of India. In a series of posts on X, Musk specifically questioned if Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani is the real boss of India, noting that Starlink has spent five years complying with local laws.
The Indian Ministry of Communications rejected these claims as baseless and misconceived, asserting that the authorization framework is fair and non-discriminatory. The government clarified that Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications, and Eutelsat OneWeb are all at broadly the same regulatory stage, currently undergoing mandatory security assessments before they can seek spectrum assignment.
At the India Mobile Congress 2026, Starlink Vice President Lauren Dreyer announced the company has already built 20 gateway sites in India and implemented security controls to keep user data within the country. Despite these investments, the company remains awaiting final security clearance and foreign direct investment approval. The government's strict security mandates are informed by the 2008 Mumbai attacks and reports of unauthorized Starlink terminals being recovered from militants in Manipur and drug smugglers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2024.
The dispute has drawn political commentary, with Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi suggesting Musk had yet to discover other influential figures in India. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy urged the government to welcome innovative solutions to protect Brand India rather than appeasing crony distractions.
