India Unveils 200 Billion Dollar Sovereign AI Roadmap

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled India's full-stack artificial intelligence roadmap at the AI Impact Summit 2026, detailing a "whole-of-nation" strategy to transition the country from an AI consumer to a creator of foundational technologies. The comprehensive plan targets five critical layers: applications, models, chips, infrastructure, and energy.

To achieve these goals, the government is executing a projected investment pipeline of nearly USD 200 billion through 2030, including over USD 100 billion for data centers. Key deliverables include the BharatGen Param2 model, which supports 22 Indian languages, and the Semicon 2.0 mission to advance chip fabrication and packaging. The government is also procuring 10,000 high-end GPUs for researchers and startups under the IndiaAI Mission.

Private sector alignment is central to the rollout. Major IT firms such as TCS and Infosys are reskilling over a million employees for AI-as-a-Service delivery. Additionally, semiconductor projects led by companies like Tata Electronics, Micron Technology, and CG Power are expected to begin commercial production in 2026, while Reliance Industries expands its data center capacity.
