UK Tribunal Rejects Google Bid to Block Ad Lawsuit
The Competition Appeal Tribunal rejected Google's attempt to stop a class action lawsuit seeking £5 billion in damages over alleged advertising market abuse.
The Competition Appeal Tribunal in the United Kingdom rejected a bid by Google to block a class action lawsuit alleging the technology company abused its market dominance. The legal action, represented by competition law academic Or Brook, claims Google overcharged businesses for online advertising and exploited its control over app distribution, mobile operating systems, and search advertising.
The tribunal ruled that the collective proceedings meet the necessary eligibility conditions, which potentially opens the door for approximately 880,000 British firms to join the claim. The claimants are seeking up to £5 billion in damages.
While the ruling allows the case to proceed to a trial on its merits, the tribunal noted that the decision does not constitute a finding that Google broke any laws. The proceedings will now move forward to determine if the company's business practices violated competition regulations.
