UK Launches Plug-in Solar Panels for Renters and Flat-Dwellers
The UK government is enabling the sale of low-cost plug-in solar panels starting August 27 to help households reduce electricity bills.
Low-cost plug-in solar panels will go on sale in Great Britain starting August 27, 2026, following wiring regulation updates by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. These balcony solar kits allow users to connect panels generating up to 800 watts directly into standard wall sockets, removing the need for professional electricians and making solar energy accessible to renters and flat-dwellers.
Major retailers including B&Q, Currys, Lidl, Wickes, and Amazon will stock the devices. While the systems cannot power an entire home, they are expected to reduce annual electricity bills by between £40 and £120. The brand UKSOL plans to launch 460W and 890W kits on the release date.
Consumer safety advocates have issued warnings regarding the installation and procurement of these systems. Electrical Safety First advised users to avoid using extension leads to prevent overheating and urged consumers to avoid third-party online marketplaces, noting that such platforms may not be legally responsible for the safety of the goods sold.
