Aleksandar Vucic Faces Student-Led Challenge in Serbian Snap Elections

Aleksandar Vucic campaigns for prime minister against a student-led opposition movement amid reports of state intimidation and police arrests ahead of October 25 elections.

Serbia is preparing for snap parliamentary elections on October 25, 2026, featuring a high-stakes contest between Aleksandar Vucic and the opposition Student List. Vucic, who resigned the presidency in September to run for prime minister, leads the right-wing Serbian Progressive Party. He is challenged by a movement led by cardiologist Ilija Srdanovic, which emerged in 2024 after a railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad killed 16 people. The Student List, composed of 250 candidates including scientists and professors, has seen polling support rise above 40 percent.

The campaign has been marked by escalating tension and state action. Serbian police recently arrested at least seven individuals in Belgrade and Novi Sad on suspicion of planning violent riots to overthrow state bodies. While the Higher Prosecution Office in Belgrade claims these arrests protect the constitutional order, opposition figures and the group Belgrade Stays describe the operations as raids on activists intended to intimidate the opposition.

In recent rallies, Vucic expressed confidence in his victory and vowed that "there will be no more politics in schools and at faculties," while accusing the student movement of acting under foreign instructions. Meanwhile, thousands of students marched into Belgrade for a final rally at Slavija Square. International monitors and the European Union have raised concerns regarding election fairness, with the Serbian Center for Research, Transparency and Accountability reporting biased media coverage and a narrowing of freedoms.
