Morrisons Supermarkets Launches First UK AI Smart Trolley Trial
Morrisons Supermarkets partnered with Instacart Inc. to introduce AI-powered Caper smart trolleys at its Preston store, marking the first UK deployment of the technology.
The supermarket chain Morrisons Supermarkets has partnered with American technology firm Instacart Inc. to deploy AI-powered Caper smart trolleys at its store in Preston. This initiative marks the first time this specific technology has been implemented by a retailer in the United Kingdom.
The Caper trolleys utilize artificial intelligence to automatically recognize items and weigh fresh produce, displaying a running total on an integrated touchscreen. Shoppers can bag items as they shop and access loyalty savings through the Morrisons More Card, eventually completing their purchases at dedicated Caper checkout lanes.
The system is designed to provide real-time spending visibility and personalized product recommendations to discourage autopilot shopping. While new to the UK, the Caper system is already operational in more than 100 cities across the United States and Australia.
