Mumbai Increases Good Air Quality Days Through BMC Initiatives
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported an increase in days with good air quality in Mumbai following the implementation of several pollution mitigation strategies.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported that Mumbai recorded 231 days of good and satisfactory air quality as of October 22, 2026, an increase from 218 days in 2025. Data from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's PRANA portal shows that PM10 concentrations declined by approximately 48 percent between 2017-18 and 2025-26.
To achieve these results, the civic body implemented several mitigation strategies. These included the installation of mandatory sensor-based air-quality monitors at 3,166 construction sites, the deployment of 76 ward-level inspection squads, and the use of 29 multipurpose vehicles for road cleaning. The city also transitioned hundreds of bakeries to cleaner fuels and installed pollution control devices at 10 crematoria.
Following these improvements, the civic body has issued its Winter Air Pollution Mitigation and Enforcement Action Plan 2026 to maintain air quality levels throughout the winter season.
