Nippon Steel Invests $3 Billion in Pennsylvania Plant Upgrades

Nippon Steel will spend $3 billion to modernize 90-year-old equipment at the Mon Valley works in Pennsylvania as part of a larger investment pledge.

Nippon Steel will invest approximately $3 billion to upgrade the hot rolling facility at the Mon Valley works in Pennsylvania. The facility is operated by U.S. Steel, which the Japanese steelmaker acquired in 2025.

The investment targets equipment that has been in operation for roughly 90 years. The new machinery is expected to begin operations in the second half of 2029, enabling the production of higher-quality steel.

This expenditure is part of a broader $11 billion investment pledge Nippon Steel made to U.S. Steel to be fulfilled by 2028.
