South Sudan Marks 15th Independence Amid Political Collapse

South Sudan celebrated 15 years of independence on July 9, 2026, amid severe financial crisis, renewed conflict, and the house arrest of Riek Machar.

South Sudan marked its 15th anniversary of independence on July 9, 2026, though the government cancelled large-scale celebrations due to severe economic instability and falling oil revenues. Salva Kiir Mayardit maintained that national elections will be held on December 22, 2026, despite a crumbling political landscape and the stalling of the 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.

Political stability collapsed following a March 2025 attack on a government military base in Nasir by the Nuer White Army. This escalation led to the removal of First Vice-President Riek Machar, who was placed under house arrest and charged with treason, murder, and crimes against humanity. The country continues to face violence in Jonglei and Upper Nile states, with reports that conflict-related violence against civilians increased by 89 percent in early 2026.

Humanitarian conditions have deteriorated due to climate shocks and the influx of 1.2 million refugees from Sudan. Approximately 82 percent of the population lives below the poverty line, and 7.8 million people face crisis levels of food insecurity. To mark the anniversary, UNESCO hosted a session in Paris focusing on peacebuilding through education and cultural preservation, while the government in Juba limited celebrations to the capital. Minister of Culture Sarah Nyanath Elijah noted that the ministry could not budget for events outside Juba.
