Niagara Peninsula Energy Announces $6.1 Million Grid Modernization Project

Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. is launching a $6.1 million grid modernization project to enhance electricity reliability for approximately 59,000 customers in Niagara Falls, Lincoln, Pelham, and West Lincoln. The investment combines $3.4 million from the utility and $2.7 million provided by Natural Resources Canada through the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program.

The project focuses on upgrading aging infrastructure to meet rising electricity demand driven by population growth and electrification. Technical improvements include the deployment of automated reclosers and the implementation of fault location and service restoration software to bridge outage management with supervisory control and data acquisition systems.

St. Catharines MP Chris Bittle announced the funding on behalf of Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson, stating that demand is rising faster than at any point in the last 20 years. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati highlighted the necessity of the upgrades to prevent service disruptions caused by unpredictable events like windstorms or fallen trees.
