Industry Experts Urge Data Center Regulations Amid AI Boom
Industry leaders at a Canberra conference called for strict regulations on data center development to prevent speculative growth from hindering Australia's energy and planning pipelines.
Industry experts at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia conference in Canberra called for strict regulations on data center development to prevent speculative developers from exploiting the artificial intelligence boom. Jack Dan, Chief Strategy Officer of CDC Data Centres, warned that inexperienced developers could clog utility and planning pipelines with unviable proposals, potentially hindering the broader industry.
In contrast, AGL CEO Damien Nicks argued that data centers could actually strengthen Australia's energy system. He suggested these facilities could underwrite new renewable energy investments and provide regional employment by occupying decommissioned power station sites.
These discussions occur as Microsoft and Amazon make multibillion-dollar investment announcements. A Climate Council report indicates Australia has over 160 existing data centers with another 90 planned. The Parliament of Australia is currently conducting an inquiry into the impact of these developments, with submissions open until September.
