Indiana Signs Deal to Add Six Gigawatts of Nuclear Power

Governor Mike Braun signed an agreement with AtkinsRéalis to integrate six gigawatts of nuclear energy into Indiana's power grid to meet rising energy demands.

Mike Braun, the Governor of Indiana, signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday with Canadian engineering firm AtkinsRéalis to bring six gigawatts of nuclear energy to the state's power grid. The initiative aims to address increasing energy needs, specifically from data centers, and would represent roughly 30% of Indiana's current 27-gigawatt electricity production.

The state's strategy begins with the installation of a nuclear microreactor at Naval Weapons Station Crane by 2028, which will be followed by the development of small modular reactors. Governor Braun stated that coal and natural gas will continue to serve as bridge energy sources until these advanced nuclear technologies are fully deployed.

The announcement occurred during the Global Nuclear Energy Economic Summit at Purdue University. While the agreement does not establish an explicit timeline for reaching the six-gigawatt goal, it formalizes a commitment to expand the state's nuclear capacity.
