Reserve Bank of New Zealand Admits Interest Rate Delay

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand acknowledged it should have raised interest rates and tightened monetary policy sooner during 2021.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand admitted in its latest Monetary Policy Review that it failed to raise interest rates in a timely manner. The central bank concluded that it could have tightened monetary policy earlier in 2021 to better manage economic conditions.

Beyond interest rate timing, the bank noted that its funding for lending programme lacked sufficient flexibility. Despite these admissions regarding past policy execution, the Reserve Bank maintained that its overall strategy remained consistent with the objectives defined in its official remit.
