King Charles III Honors Fallen Marines in Bahamas

King Charles III laid a wreath at the Flamingo Monument in the Bahamas to honor four Royal Bahamas Defence Force marines killed in 1980.

King Charles III honored fallen military personnel during the second day of his Caribbean tour in the Bahamas. At Coral Harbour, the King inspected Royal Bahamas Defence Force troops and received a Royal Salute from a Guard of Honour and Colour Party consisting of 106 officers and marines.

The King laid a wreath at the Flamingo Monument to commemorate four marines—Fenrick Sturrup, Austin Smith, David Tucker, and Edward Williams—who died in May 1980. The personnel were killed after Cuban MiG fighter aircraft sank the HMBS Flamingo during a dispute over illegal fishing.

During the ceremony, the King met with the families of the deceased marines and surviving crew member Force Chief Petty Officer Gregory Curry. Commodore Floyd Moxey, the Commander Defence Force, received the King at the event.
