Google Develops Phone to Watch Unlock for Pixel Devices
Google is creating a feature that allows an unlocked Pixel phone to automatically unlock a paired Pixel Watch, removing the need for manual PIN entry.
Google is developing a new feature called Phone to Watch Unlock that enables a paired Pixel phone to automatically unlock a Pixel Watch. This functionality reverses the current Watch Unlock system, which allows an unlocked watch to unlock a phone. The new feature aims to eliminate the need for users to repeatedly enter a PIN or pattern on their wearable device screen.
Code strings discovered within the Connected Phone and Watch Services app indicate that the feature will be exclusive to the Pixel hardware ecosystem. To enable the service, users must complete a one-time setup process by verifying the watch's PIN or pattern on their phone. Once configured, the watch will unlock automatically whenever the paired phone is unlocked nearby.
Google has not officially announced the feature or a release date. However, the discovery precedes the Made by Google event on August 12, where a new Pixel Watch is expected. The feature could potentially debut at that event or arrive as part of an upcoming Android 17 feature drop.
