Privacy Groups Sue Trump Administration Over National Data Banks

The League of Women Voters and the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a class action federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., on September 30, 2025, seeking to block the Trump administration from aggregating personal data on millions of U.S. citizens. The lawsuit alleges that the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Government Efficiency established unlawful national data banks that violate federal privacy laws and the U.S. Constitution.

Plaintiffs specifically target the conversion of the SAVE system into a citizenship lookup tool linked to Social Security Administration data, arguing this integration could disenfranchise eligible voters. The complaint further alleges the creation of a data lake managed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, which purportedly pools sensitive biometric and tax records.

John Davisson, the director of litigation for the Electronic Privacy Information Center, contends the administration is illegally hoarding sensitive personal information and threatening constitutional rights. The lawsuit names the Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security, and Social Security Administration as defendants.
