Christine Lagarde Signals Pre-emptive ECB Action Against Inflation

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde signaled pre-emptive monetary tightening to prevent wage-price spirals while declining to run for the presidency of France.

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that the central bank will not wait for second-round inflation effects to be fully visible before responding to current price pressures. While she noted that inflation is currently driven predominantly by energy prices, Lagarde indicated the ECB is monitoring collective bargaining agreements for early signs of wage-price spirals to determine if pre-emptive tightening is necessary.

Lagarde characterized the euro area's 2026 economic growth of 1.1% as "not brilliant but not bad." Addressing the rising borrowing costs and debt pressures facing France, she asserted that the primary solution lies in French fiscal policy rather than with the ECB.

In a separate personal announcement, Lagarde confirmed she will not run for president of France in the upcoming election.
