Intercontinental Exchange Launches Precious Metals Futures in London

Intercontinental Exchange launched gold, silver, platinum, and palladium futures contracts in London to establish a derivatives market in the global physical bullion hub.

Intercontinental Exchange, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, launched new futures contracts for gold, silver, platinum, and palladium in London on Monday. The initiative aims to establish a formal derivatives market within the world's primary physical bullion hub, allowing investors to hedge precious metals exposure directly in the city.

This launch addresses a market gap created in 2022 when the London Metal Exchange closed its gold futures contract due to low trading activity. That closure had previously left New York as the dominant global center for exchange-traded gold derivatives.

London remains a critical center for physical assets, with vaults holding approximately 9,632 metric tons of gold as of August. Over-the-counter trading volumes in the city exceed $180 billion daily, providing a significant foundation for the new exchange-traded contracts.
