Mamata Banerjee Reaches Serampore Rally Despite Alleged House Arrest

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee reached a rally at the Serampore Court ground on September 26, 2026, after alleging that she and other party leaders were placed under house arrest. The rally had been authorized by the Calcutta High Court with a 1,000-participant limit after police initially denied permission.

Banerjee claimed that BJP workers blocked the route to the venue and that police ignored attacks on her party members. During the transit, a mob in Uttarpara surrounded the vehicle of TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh, hurling eggs, stones, and sticks, which forced Ghosh to return to Kolkata.

Banerjee eventually accessed the venue via an alternative route through Dankuni and Delhi Road. The West Bengal BJP rejected the allegations, with state president Samik Bhattacharya and spokesperson Debjit Sarkar stating the claims were baseless and denying that the attackers in Uttarpara were associated with the party.
