Microsoft Returns to Console Exclusives to Drive Xbox Hardware Sales

Microsoft is pivoting back to console-exclusive titles, starting with Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, to incentivize hardware purchases and strengthen the Xbox brand.

During the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft announced a strategic pivot back to console exclusivity to incentivize hardware purchases and reward long-term ecosystem investors. Led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who took the role in February 2026, the company is moving away from a previous aggressive multiplatform strategy. As part of this business reset, Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are now permanent Xbox console exclusives and will not be released on PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2.

The decision regarding Gears of War: E-Day sparked controversy after a PlayStation 5 logo accidentally appeared in an official podcast video and placeholder listings surfaced at retailers. While reports suggested the PS5 port was canceled at the last minute, Xbox VP of Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg stated the decision was made roughly a month in advance. The game is scheduled for release on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Chief Content Officer Matt Booty clarified that exclusivity will now be determined on a case-by-case basis. Large multiplayer and live-service games will remain multiplatform, and Microsoft will honor previous commitments to release titles like Fable, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Forza Horizon 6 on competing consoles. Chief Strategist Matthew Ball described this as a new internal framework intended to provide a reliable pipeline of exclusive content, positioning Xbox as a top entertainment company by 2030.
