Volkswagen Exports China-Developed Tech to Global South Markets

Volkswagen Group is shifting its strategy to export technologies developed in China to South America and Africa to revive sales and counter domestic Chinese competition.

Volkswagen Group is transitioning its China operations from a localized market strategy to a global development and export hub. The automaker will now export technologies developed in China to overseas markets, specifically targeting the Global South. This shift marks a departure from the previous "In China, for China" approach as the company seeks to offset dwindling market share caused by domestic competitors like BYD and Geely.

The company will implement its Compact Main Platform with China Electronic Architecture in next-generation models for Africa and South America, with the South American rollout expected by the end of the decade. As part of this transformation, Volkswagen unveiled VEGA, a technology package featuring Level 3 autonomous-driving readiness and 850-volt fast charging, scheduled for launch in 2027.

CEO Oliver Blume characterized China as a key innovation engine and a product and tech hub for the company's global markets. The strategy aims to transform China-based operations into a cost-efficient base for global exports, utilizing research and development conducted in Hefei.
