Eric Schmidt Warns Electricity Shortage Limits AI Superintelligence

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt warned that electricity, rather than funding or semiconductor availability, is the primary limiting factor for the development of artificial superintelligence. Speaking on the Moonshots podcast, Schmidt stated that the United States needs an additional 92 gigawatts of power to support the AI revolution, noting a critical lack of new nuclear power station construction over the last 30 years.

Tech companies are pursuing alternative power sources to meet these demands. Microsoft entered a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant by 2028. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also emphasized that energy breakthroughs are essential for the future of AI.

Environmental critics, including Greenpeace, warn that the high energy and water consumption associated with AI workloads could derail global climate goals.
