Microsoft Opens Hyderabad Data Center Amid Google AI Leadership Shift

Microsoft launched the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, Telangana, on August 6, 2026. This fourth Azure data center region in India—joining existing hubs in Pune, Chennai, and Mumbai—establishes the company as the country's largest hyperscale cloud provider. The facility features three Availability Zones and mechanical cooling systems designed for zero water consumption to support sustainability goals.

The Hyderabad expansion is part of a broader $20.5 billion investment commitment to India's cloud and AI infrastructure. Early adopters of the new region include HDFC Bank, Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv, and PB Pay. This move aligns with the Government of India's priority to build domestic AI infrastructure and reduce dependence on foreign technology. Additionally, Microsoft aims to train 20 million Indians in AI skills by 2030.

Simultaneously, Alphabet Inc. executed a significant leadership overhaul within its AI division. Longtime AI leader Jeff Dean departed to launch a machine learning research startup called Discovery Loop. Demis Hassabis transitioned away from day-to-day operational control of Google DeepMind to serve as its chairman and the chief scientist of Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, assumed operational control of the laboratory.
