Alani Bankhead Refuses to Withdraw from Montana Senate Race

Democratic nominee Alani Bankhead refused calls to withdraw from the Montana U.S. Senate race, ensuring a four-way contest for the November election after the August 10 deadline passed. Bankhead declined pressure from local and national Democratic party members to drop out and unify the anti-Republican vote behind independent candidate Seth Bodnar.

Negotiations between Bankhead and Bodnar in late July, mediated by state party executive director Emily Marburger, failed to produce a withdrawal. This outcome contrasts with similar races in Idaho, South Dakota, and Nebraska, where Democratic candidates stepped aside to allow independents a head-to-head matchup against Republicans. Bankhead reported that her family faced harassment intended to force her exit, leading her to implement additional security precautions.

Republican nominee Kurt Alme currently leads in polling, though data varies on whether Bodnar or Bankhead is the more viable challenger. Bodnar leads the field in fundraising with $3.2 million, significantly outpacing Alme's $1.9 million and Bankhead's $58,000. While Bodnar and the Montana Freedom PAC condemned the harassment of Bankhead's family, Bodnar's campaign suggested that Republican-aligned dark money groups may be supporting Bankhead's candidacy to split the non-Republican vote.

The final ballot includes Alme, Bankhead, Bodnar, and Libertarian candidate Kyle Austin, with Jami Woodman registered as a write-in. National analysts currently favor the Republicans to retain the seat.
