Hong Kong Regulator Freezes $599 Million to Combat IPO Rigging
The Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong restricted assets across 31 brokerages and suspended a stock to dismantle IPO-rigging syndicates.
The Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong launched one of the broadest enforcement actions in the city's history on Tuesday to combat IPO-rigging syndicates. The regulator suspended a stock and restricted dealing in HK$4.7 billion ($599 million) of assets across 31 brokerages.
As part of the crackdown, the commission warned banks against arrangements that artificially inflate demand for new listings. The regulator issued a circular detailing red flags associated with share sales, specifically highlighting secret handshakes and sudden loans as indicators of market manipulation.
