Fairbanks Mayor Proposes Data Center Moratorium Amid Energy Concerns

Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Grier Hopkins proposed a yearlong moratorium on data centers as community groups challenge military-led commercial development in Interior Alaska.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Grier Hopkins sponsored a draft ordinance proposing a yearlong moratorium on data centers to allow for policy development and impact assessments. The move comes as community organizations host a town hall titled "Nobody Asked Us" at the Wedgewood Resort to address concerns over large-scale data center construction in Interior Alaska.

The controversy follows a request for proposals from the Department of the Air Force for commercial development on military land surrounding Clear Space Force Base, Eielson Air Force Base, and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. While Governor Mike Dunleavy and Senator Dan Sullivan have promoted Alaska as an ideal host for these facilities to support the proposed Alaska LNG pipeline, other leaders disagree.

Senator Lisa Murkowski opposes the development, citing the inability of the Railbelt to support such energy-intensive facilities during an energy crunch. The town hall, coordinated by Alaskans for Data Center Accountability, aims to discuss the potential impacts of these projects on local land and resources.
