UK Retailers Expand Paternity Leave as MPs Urge Reform

Major UK retailers have increased paternity leave to six weeks of full pay, prompting Labour MPs to demand national legislative improvements in the upcoming budget.

Major UK retailers, including Tesco and Marks & Spencer, have implemented enhanced paternity leave policies providing six weeks of full pay. These offerings significantly exceed the statutory two-week minimum currently mandated by the government.

Research from campaign groups The Dad Shift and Inspiring Dads reveals a growing disparity in parental leave across different industries. While the retail sector has expanded benefits, the construction, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors continue to lag behind. The United Kingdom currently ranks 40th out of 43 OECD countries regarding the generosity of its paternity leave.

In response to these disparities, more than 100 Labour MPs have urged the government to improve national standards in the upcoming budget. Their proposal includes six weeks of leave paid at 90% of earnings, capped at £1,200 per week, and the extension of benefits to self-employed fathers. This push follows a parliamentary roundtable hosted by MP Connor Rand and the shop workers' union Usdaw to discuss the transformation of parental leave.

The government is currently conducting an 18-month review of the parental leave system, with a report expected later this year.
