EV Sales Hit Record 23.3% Market Share in Australia
Electric vehicle sales reached a record high in June 2026, with BYD surging to become the second-largest manufacturer behind Toyota.
Battery electric vehicle (EV) sales in Australia reached a record high for the fifth consecutive month in June 2026, accounting for 23.3% of all new vehicle sales. More than 32,500 EVs were sold out of 140,000 total new vehicles. This surge helped China surpass Japan as the primary source of new vehicles for the Australian market, a trend that began in February 2026.
BYD Company experienced a massive growth spike, selling 18,881 vehicles in June to become the second-largest manufacturer in the country. To meet this demand, the company redirected its own cargo ship, the BYD Zhengzhou, to Australia. Tesla also achieved a record with 8,670 sales, and its Model Y became the best-selling individual vehicle in Australia, surpassing the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux. Toyota remained the top-selling brand overall with over 19,000 sales.
Industry leaders attribute the growth to a combination of cost-of-living pressures, a fringe benefit tax exemption, and a fuel price spike in March 2026 caused by a crisis in the Middle East. While some factors were short-term, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries describes the trend as a permanent structural shift moving EVs into the mainstream. Low-emission vehicles, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, now represent 49.5% of the total market.
