Sri Lanka Navy Detains Seven Indian Fishermen for Poaching
The Sri Lanka Navy arrested seven Indian fishermen and seized their trawler for crossing the maritime boundary north of Talaimannar.
The Sri Lanka Navy arrested seven Indian fishermen from Rameswaram and Thangachimadam and seized their trawler on October 31, 2026. The North Central Naval Command intercepted the vessel north of Talaimannar after the crew allegedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line for poaching. The crew and vessel were transported to the Talaimannar jetty and subsequently transferred to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources office in Mannar for legal proceedings.
The arrests occurred shortly after the fishermen returned to sea following a four-day cyclone warning. This incident is part of a pattern of maritime tensions in the Palk Strait; the Sri Lanka Navy previously arrested nine Indian fishermen south of Delft Island last month for similar violations.
Fishermen associations in Tamil Nadu condemned the arrests. N Devadas, president of the Rameswaram Fishermen Association, alleged that Sri Lankan authorities frequently nationalize and destroy seized vessels, claiming more than 300 boats have been destroyed. Local leaders in Ramanathapuram also held an emergency meeting, demanding that the Tamil Nadu government prevent fishermen from Karaikal and Nagapattinam from trespassing into their traditional domains, arguing such incursions provoke Sri Lankan naval actions.
