Thames Water Urges Conservation as Demand Surges 30 Percent

Thames Water requested Oxfordshire residents restrict water use after record heat drove household consumption up 30 percent, though the company avoided implementing a formal hosepipe ban.

Throughout mid-July 2026, Thames Water urged customers in Oxfordshire to restrict their water usage following a 30 percent average increase in daily household consumption. The surge was driven by record-breaking heat and tropical nights, with the company noting that demand for outdoor water use in some areas exceeded the network's capacity to produce and distribute it.

Despite the pressure on the system, the utility has not implemented a formal hosepipe ban as of July 14. The company pointed to the Farmoor Reservoir in Oxfordshire, which remained 97 percent full, a level above the seasonal average. However, the request for conservation drew criticism from residents who argued that the company should prioritize infrastructure investment and leak repairs across the Thames Valley over restricting bill payers.

In a contrasting development, neighboring Anglian Water implemented its first hosepipe ban since 2012. Effective 1 a.m. Saturday, the ban prohibits the use of hosepipes for filling paddling pools, cleaning vehicles, or watering gardens across parts of Norfolk and Suffolk in response to the summer's third heatwave.
