Violence Erupts at APC Rally in Nasarawa State

Violence at an APC campaign rally in Lafia left 40 injured and led the Nasarawa State Government to order an investigation into political sabotage.

A violent clash erupted during an All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Lafia, leaving at least 40 people injured and several others missing. The chaos began when youths wearing APC regalia chanted slogans supporting Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate Adamu Abubakar, sparking confrontations with security forces and supporters of APC candidate Ahmed Aliyu Wadada.

The Government of Nasarawa State attributed the violence to former governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and Adamu Abubakar, describing the incident as an "Ignoble act." State officials reported that Governor Abdullahi Sule was pelted with objects, suspected to be stones, by aggrieved party members during the event. The disturbances occurred while Vice President Kashim Shettima was visiting the Emir of Lafia, forcing organizers to end the rally prematurely to protect the dignitaries.

Secretary to the State Government Labaran Magaji characterized the disruptions as disrespectful to the office of the Vice President and the traditional institution. The state government has directed the State Security Service and other security agencies to conduct a full investigation to identify those responsible, noting that the unrest stems from ongoing political disagreements within the Nasarawa state chapter of the APC following a recent governorship primary.
