Mike Rogers Launches Coalition to Court Disaffected Michigan Democrats

Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers launched the "Democrats for Mike Rogers" coalition on Thursday in Detroit, Michigan, specifically targeting Democratic voters dissatisfied with the party's nominee, Abdul El-Sayed. A former congressman and FBI agent, Rogers positioned himself as a bridge across political divides, appealing to moderate and Jewish voters who oppose El-Sayed's far-left platform.

During the event, State Representative Karen Whitsett endorsed Rogers, arguing that El-Sayed's Medicare for All proposal would result in government control over healthcare and the loss of private insurance. Rabbi Asher Lopatin also supported Rogers, accusing El-Sayed of antisemitism for using commentator Hasan Piker as a campaign surrogate.

Abdul El-Sayed, a physician and former Wayne County Health Department director, won a narrow primary victory on August 4. His platform includes nationalizing healthcare, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and ending military aid to Israel. El-Sayed has denied accusations of antisemitism, stating he reveres the Jewish people while maintaining opposition to the Israeli government.

The El-Sayed campaign dismissed the new coalition, with spokesperson Cole Wozniak claiming Rogers would prioritize the agenda of Donald Trump over Michigan's interests. The race is currently rated as a toss-up by Cook Political Report, with recent polling showing the candidates within the margin of error or with Rogers holding a slight lead.
