Russia and Ukraine Exchange Massive Aerial Strikes

The Military of Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine's Kyiv and Odesa regions overnight into September 1, 2026. The attack utilized ballistic, cruise, and anti-radar missiles alongside 218 drones and decoys. At least 11 people were killed and more than a dozen wounded, including three children. In Kyiv, strikes hit residential buildings and a railway depot, where seven people died. In the Odesa region, Russian forces damaged residential buildings, a sewing factory, and the Orlivka international ferry crossing on the Romanian border.

Russian officials stated the operation targeted military-industrial, fuel, and energy facilities. The Air Force of Ukraine reported destroying or suppressing 199 aerial targets, including five ballistic missiles and 187 drones. The strikes occurred amid a reported shortage of U.S.-made Patriot interceptor missiles.

Simultaneously, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine conducted drone strikes against Russian territory, including facilities in the Samara and Belgorod regions and the Baltic port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region. The attack on Ust-Luga sparked a fire at the facility, which serves as a critical gateway for crude oil, petroleum products, coal, fertilizers, and grain. Russian authorities reported downing 52 drones over the coastal region. These strikes are part of a broader Ukrainian campaign to disrupt Russian energy infrastructure, which has contributed to domestic gasoline shortages and prompted the Russian government to extend a ban on diesel exports through September.
