Federal Prosecutors Investigate Democratic Fund-raising Firm Authentic Campaigns

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois is investigating Authentic Campaigns Inc. over alleged political ties to Judge Juan Merchan.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois has conducted a year-long investigation into Authentic Campaigns Inc., a Democratic fund-raising firm. The inquiry follows a criminal referral from Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee, who alleged that Judge Juan Merchan's prosecution of Donald Trump in a New York hush-money trial was politically motivated and that the firm improperly used the trial for fund-raising purposes.

U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros initiated the probe by issuing a grand jury subpoena for internal communications involving high-profile clients, including Joseph Biden Jr. and Kamala Harris. The firm was previously co-owned by Loren Merchan, the daughter of Judge Merchan. While prosecutors eventually narrowed the scope of the subpoena to focus on emails between Loren Merchan and her father and a specific payment from the Harris campaign, it remains unclear if charges will be filed.

Mike Nellis, the founder of Authentic Campaigns, has strongly denied any wrongdoing. He characterized the federal investigation as a politically driven effort to target his company and the clients it represents.
