Intel Acquires Classiq for $2.2 Billion to Lead Quantum Computing

Intel acquired Tel Aviv-based Classiq for $2.2 billion to establish a global development center for quantum computing software.

Intel acquired Classiq, a quantum computing software company based in Tel Aviv, for $2.2 billion. The transaction represents the largest acquisition of a quantum computing firm to date and the first such purchase by a major U.S. technology company.

Classiq developed a hardware-agnostic operating system that enables developers to design and test complex algorithms across various quantum computer types. The company previously served high-profile clients including BMW, HSBC, and Rolls Royce. Under the terms of the agreement, Classiq will serve as Intel's global development center for quantum computing.

Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who was an early investor in Classiq, drove the acquisition to expand the company's reach into quantum technology and operating systems. Venture capital firms Entrée Capital and Team8 are the primary financial beneficiaries of the sale. Some critics have noted Intel's history of unsuccessful Israeli acquisitions, specifically citing the purchase of Granulate.
