Citi Reports Interest Rates Decoupling From Stock Valuations
Citigroup analysts report that interest rates now influence economic growth expectations more than stock market valuations due to AI fundamentals and structural investor shifts.
Analysts at Citigroup report that the traditional relationship between bond yields and equity valuations has weakened. Interest rates now exert a greater influence on economic growth expectations than on stock market valuations, a shift driven by artificial intelligence fundamentals and structural changes in investor behavior.
These structural shifts include a transition from defined-benefit to defined-contribution pension plans and an increase in foreign investment. While cyclical and defensive stocks have declined since late August because of interest-rate sensitivity, growth stocks have remained resilient, supported by AI-related earnings expectations.
Citi's fair value model estimates the S&P 500's fair value range between 17.1 and 22.1 times earnings. Because the index currently trades at 22.4 times earnings, analysts suggest the market reflects stretched sentiment and complacent investor positioning.
