AI Giants Invest Billions to Build Forward Deployed Engineering Workforce

Major AI companies are investing billions to train forward deployed engineers to help corporate clients convert AI spending into measurable business results.

Major technology companies and consulting firms are investing billions of dollars to create a workforce of forward deployed engineers (FDEs) to help corporate clients translate artificial intelligence investments into measurable business results. This surge follows growing investor impatience with AI spending that has not yet yielded clear financial returns, a trend reflected in recent losses for AI-themed stocks.

Amazon Web Services has committed $1 billion to its FDE initiative to help customers turn investments into results at speed. OpenAI has launched a deployment business backed by over $4 billion, which included the acquisition of consulting firm Tomoro. Anthropic is investing $100 million to train 10,000 FDEs by 2027 through its Claude Frontier Academy, utilizing a medical-style residency model to close the AI skills gap.

Other industry players are also expanding their capabilities, with Google Cloud and Accenture collaborating to build a 1,000-person FDE workforce. The demand for these specialized roles is evident in the U.S. labor market, where job postings for FDEs rose from under 200 in 2023 to over 7,300 in the first nine months of 2026, with median advertised salaries reaching $195,456.
