Microsoft to Unveil Maia 300 AI Chip in September

Microsoft plans to unveil its next-generation Maia 300 AI chip in September as part of a strategy to reduce its dependence on expensive Nvidia processors. This development follows the January release of the Maia 200 and aligns with broader industry trends as competitors Alphabet and Amazon scale their own in-house chip efforts.

The company is currently negotiating with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for over 300,000 units for delivery in 2027. Microsoft has set a long-term objective to secure capacity for more than 1 million chips to support its infrastructure needs.

Once production ramps up, Microsoft intends to encourage major cloud customers, including Anthropic, to adopt the hardware. This move comes as Alphabet already recognizes revenue from its Tensor Processing Units and Amazon sees growing adoption of its Trainium processors.
