Microsoft Corp. to Unveil Maia 300 AI Chip in September

Microsoft Corp. plans to unveil its next-generation Maia 300 artificial intelligence chip as early as September 2026. The move is part of a broader strategy to expand in-house hardware capabilities and decrease the company's dependence on expensive processors from Nvidia Corp.

The company is currently negotiating with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) to secure production capacity for more than 300,000 units for delivery in 2027. Microsoft's long-term objective is to secure capacity for more than one million chips. This follows the January release of the Maia 200, which utilized TSMC's 3-nanometer technology.

Microsoft intends to ramp up production and encourage major cloud customers, including Anthropic PBC, to adopt the new hardware. This effort comes as competitors Alphabet Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. scale their own in-house chip initiatives, with Google already recognizing revenue from its Tensor Processing Units and Amazon seeing growing adoption of its Trainium processors.
