Chuck Edwards Urges House to Reject Censure Recommendation

Republican Representative Chuck Edwards of North Carolina has asked his House colleagues to reconsider a recommendation for his censure following an investigation by the United States House Committee on Ethics. The committee found that Edwards engaged in persistent, unprofessional, and inappropriate conduct toward two female aides, including giving gifts such as jewelry, designer purses, guns, and vacations. The panel described these actions as beyond norms of professional behavior and concluded they violated the House Official Code of Conduct regarding sexual harassment.

In a letter dated August 25, Edwards argued that the committee took an extraordinary analytical leap to reach its conclusion. He noted that the investigation found he did not engage in sexual activity, explicitly proposition staff, violate federal sexual harassment law, or engage in quid pro quo harassment. He characterized his interactions as affectionate friendships and disputed the committee's selective use of evidence, which included text messages where a staffer described a large ice cream delivery as excessive and expressed discomfort with flowers sent during a trip to Las Vegas.

Edwards announced on August 4 that he will not seek re-election, dropping his bid two days after the committee recommended the censure. Republicans have nominated State Representative Jennifer Balkcom to run for the 11th Congressional District, a candidacy endorsed by Donald Trump on August 17.
