Mario Draghi Warns Europe Lags in AI and Trade

Mario Draghi argues Europe must address French fiscal profligacy and accelerate AI development to compete with the United States and China.

Former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi stated that France is currently far from triggering a broader euro-area crisis, despite rising debt spreads and fiscal challenges. He attributed the current situation to "fiscal profligacy" coinciding with global interest rate hikes, though he noted the European Central Bank now possesses tools and experience that were absent during the 2011 crisis.

Draghi emphasized that France must agree on a medium-term budget retrenchment path, while acknowledging the political difficulty of implementing cuts amid public demands for spending. Beyond national fiscal issues, he argued that Europe lags behind the United States and China in the development of frontier AI models. He suggested that Europe's competitive advantage lies in diffusing AI into its automated manufacturing sector.

To reduce reliance on China and de-risk supply chains, Draghi advocated for the formation of new trade coalitions with partners such as India and Canada. He also expressed concern over the rising budgetary deficit in the United States and warned that European political decision-making remains too slow, despite a decrease in complacency regarding the continent's economic position.
