Artificial intelligence is driving a trend of workforce deskilling characterized by a paradox where worker productivity increases while foundational cognitive abilities decline. This phenomenon allows workers to produce high-quality outputs while their underlying technical skills atrophy, creating an illusion of expertise.

John Nosta, founder of Nosta Lab, identifies this as the AI rebound effect, where polished AI outputs mask a regression of a worker's baseline skills. Software consultant Josh Anderson illustrated this effect by building an app called Road Trip Ninja without writing any code. Although the initial development was rapid, Anderson reported a loss of confidence and hesitation when he later attempted to manually edit the resulting 100,000-line codebase.

Experts warn that junior employees are most vulnerable to this trend because they may miss critical early-career training in problem-solving. To mitigate these risks, the International Data Center Authority suggests that companies implement mental gyms to encourage AI-free problem-solving and ensure long-term skill retention.
