Microsoft Builds Data Centers in Chelan County Washington
Microsoft is investing billions to build data centers in Malaga, Washington, replacing local fruit orchards with industrial infrastructure and fusion power research.
Microsoft is expanding its data center infrastructure into Malaga, Washington, through a multi-billion dollar investment project. The development has led to the removal of local fruit orchards, including an 80-acre cherry orchard purchased by Sabey, to make room for industrial facilities. The project currently employs 650 to 700 construction workers and is expected to create approximately 250 long-term full-time jobs and generate millions in annual property tax revenue.
The industrial shift has created tension among local orchardists over land competition, increased traffic in nearby Wenatchee, and the loss of the region's agricultural identity. To address these concerns, Microsoft has provided over $51 million for water infrastructure, including new reservoirs and wells, and contributed $1.5 million to renovate the Malaga fire station. Additionally, Microsoft is partnering with Helion Energy to explore fusion power in the area.
Local officials, including Chelan County Commissioner Kevin Overbay, argue that the transition to technology is an economic necessity. They point to a declining agricultural sector driven by an aging workforce and increasing automation as the primary reason for embracing industrial cloud computing and AI hubs.
