Morocco Bids for UN Security Council Seat for 2028-2029

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced Morocco's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term. The announcement occurred on Tuesday in New York during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Bourita stated the bid is based on a vision of solidarity-based international cooperation, respect for international law, and the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He linked the candidacy to the vision of King Mohammed VI to establish Morocco as a reliable actor in promoting global stability and sustainable development.

If successful, Morocco would occupy one of the three seats allocated to African countries on the 15-member council for a two-year mandate. The Kingdom previously held non-permanent seats during the 1963-1964 and 1992-1993 terms.
