Russia Threatens Nuclear Strike Over Potential Kaliningrad Blockade
The Government of Russia warned it may use nuclear weapons if NATO blockades the strategic exclave of Kaliningrad.
The Government of Russia issued official warnings through its embassies in Belgium, Britain, and Ireland, and via a diplomatic note to NATO, stating it is prepared to use nuclear weapons if NATO blockades the strategic exclave of Kaliningrad. The region is critical for Russian naval capacity and air defense.
NATO spokespeople denied the existence of such a threat, maintaining that alliance actions are purely defensive. However, tensions have escalated following statements from Baltic and Central European officials. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kstutis Budrys asserted that NATO must demonstrate the capacity to penetrate Kaliningrad and raze Russian air defenses, while European Union Defence Minister Andrius Kubilius stated that Vladimir Putin needs to feel that war is coming to Russia itself.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski proposed that NATO conduct aggressive exercises to create uncertainty for the Russian leadership. The diplomatic friction coincides with reports that the United States provided intelligence to assist Ukraine in striking oil and gas facilities inside Russian territory.
