Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon Warns of US Debt Reckoning
David Solomon argues that accelerated economic growth, driven by AI infrastructure, is the only way to avoid a financial reckoning from rising US national debt.
During a conversation at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., David Solomon, chair and CEO of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., warned that the United States faces a significant economic reckoning if it does not accelerate growth to offset rising public debt. Solomon noted that national debt has surged from $7 trillion to $38 trillion since the financial crisis, with a trajectory heading toward $40 trillion.
Solomon asserted that the only viable solution to avoid this crisis is faster economic growth rather than increased revenue. He identified artificial intelligence infrastructure investment as a primary driver of this productivity, estimating that six or seven large companies will invest $350 billion this year. While he described the opportunity as enormous, he cautioned that the path would not be linear and that some capital will fail to produce adequate returns.
Despite the debt warnings, Solomon maintained that the U.S. economy remains strong and the dollar will keep its status as the global reserve currency. He also dismissed concerns regarding systemic risk in credit markets following the collapse of Tricolor Holdings and First Brands Group, characterizing those events as individual instances of bad credit rather than a broader market failure.
