UN Mission Urges Iran to Halt Protest-Related Executions

The United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on Iran has called on Iranian authorities to halt the executions of 10 young men sentenced to death after protests in Isfahan's Alikhani Square on January 8. This appeal follows the July 19 executions of two men involved in the same case, Erfan Esfandiari and Gol Mohammad Mohammadi.

These deaths are part of a wider trend of capital punishment linked to nationwide protests that started on December 28, 2025. According to the Iranian Judiciary, 23 men have been executed since March. The UN Mission reports a more extensive toll, noting that over 60 individuals, including women and children, have received death sentences since December.

Pressure on detainees has increased following a directive from Head of the Judiciary Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i to expedite legal proceedings. In response, Tehran Prosecutor General Ali Salehi announced that cases regarding unrest from June 2025 and December 2025 have been finalized and referred to the courts.
