Vermont Secretary of State Releases Early Voting Data for August Primary

Vermont Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas released early voting data showing that only 3% to 3.1% of registered voters had cast ballots ahead of the primary election on Tuesday, August 11. This is the first time the state has publicized such statistics, an effort intended to encourage participation by providing a blow-by-blow look at turnout. Copeland Hanzas attributed the low numbers to summer vacations and confusion regarding the primary process, noting that primary ballots must be specifically requested.

To ensure ballots are received by the 7 p.m. deadline on Election Day, the Secretary of State urged voters to use drop boxes or deliver ballots in person. While overall turnout is low, 55 towns—including Shelburne, Calais, and Barre Town—reported higher activity due to contested state Senate seats.

The upcoming primary features a surge in candidates, with 134 Republicans and 190 Democrats filing, representing increases of 19.6% and 9.2% respectively over 2024. This growth is driven by disputes over land-use law, property taxes, and education reform. Notable contests include the Windsor District Senate race, where six candidates are competing for three slots following a decision by a State Senator not to seek a sixth term, and the Orange District, where two Democrats are challenging appointed Senator John Benson.
