Australian Ministers Pressure ATO to Reverse Credit Card Ban

Australian government ministers are urging the Australian Taxation Office to reverse a December 1 ban on credit card payments for tax bills.

Australian government ministers are pressuring the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to reverse a decision to stop accepting credit card payments for tax bills starting December 1. Tax Commissioner Rob Heferen announced the ban to avoid an estimated $200 million in annual processing costs, which the agency cannot pass to taxpayers following a Reserve Bank of Australia decision to ban credit card surcharges on October 1.

While Assistant Minister Andrew Charlton defended the move as consistent with the private sector, other government officials have expressed alarm. Housing Minister Clare O’Neil and Small Business Minister Anne Aly urged the ATO to consult with businesses to find an alternative solution. O’Neil noted that the government has "real concerns" regarding the proposal, specifically highlighting how small businesses use credit cards to manage cash flow.

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and small business operators have criticized the ban. The group argues that the ability to pay tax via credit card is an essential tool for business operators to maintain liquidity and manage their financial obligations.
