Nvidia and Meta Drive Gains in U.S. Stock Indexes

Major U.S. stock indexes rose on September 2 as gains in Nvidia and Meta Platforms offset broader market weakness.

Major U.S. stock indexes closed higher on September 2, 2026, led by significant gains in the technology sector. The S&P 500 added 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both rose 0.4%.

Nvidia Inc. drove the majority of the movement, with its stock jumping 3.8% to $225.67. This increase added $206 billion in market value and provided a 0.38% boost to the Nasdaq Composite alone. Meta Platforms Incorporated also contributed significantly with a 2.9% stock jump. Without the performance of these two companies, the Nasdaq would have closed lower and the S&P 500's gains would have fallen to 0.12%.

John Williams, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, attributed rising Treasury yields to a strong economy supported by data center investments and artificial intelligence. He noted that the central bank is preparing for its rate-setting meeting scheduled for September 15-16. In other market activity, gold prices rose 1% and oil prices increased 0.2% following strikes near the Strait of Hormuz.
