Meta and Partners Launch Open Personal Agent Protocol
Meta, Walmart, Stripe, and Sierra introduced an open standard to regulate how AI agents interact with businesses and secure personal data.
Meta, Walmart, Stripe, and the AI startup Sierra have introduced a personal agent protocol to establish an open standard for how artificial intelligence agents interact with businesses. Led by Bret Taylor, the co-founder of Sierra and chairman of OpenAI, the initiative seeks to eliminate the current chaos of AI bot interactions by creating authentication rails.
The protocol allows businesses to distinguish between authorized agents acting for humans and unauthorized bots. It provides visibility into agent activities and secures the transmission of financial and personal data. This development follows the rapid growth of Meta's Muse agent, which has reached millions of users in the United States.
The move addresses ongoing tensions between AI companies and platforms. For example, Amazon has previously blocked agents from companies like Meta and Perplexity to prevent unauthorized website scraping. By defining these rails, the partners aim to create a system similar to email, where a universal standard allows different agents and businesses to communicate smoothly and securely.
